1 at large是介詞短語，此處表示“逍遙自在”、“行動(dòng)自由”的意思。
2 When reports came into London Zoo that a wild puma had been spotted forty-five miles south of London, 當(dāng)倫敦動(dòng)物園接到報(bào)告說，在倫敦以南45英里的地方發(fā)現(xiàn)一頭野生美洲獅時(shí)。這個(gè)從句中以that引導(dǎo)的從句是reports的同位語，用于進(jìn)一步說明報(bào)告的內(nèi)容。
3 feel obliged to do sth. 是“感到不得不做某事”的意思。
4 it left behind it a trail of, 它身后留下一串……。
a trail of作left的賓語，behind it是狀語，提到賓語之前是為了使句子結(jié)構(gòu)更緊湊。
5 puma fur was found clinging to bushes中，clinging是現(xiàn)在分詞，此處作主語puma fur的主語補(bǔ)足語。下文中As no pumas had been reported missing…一句中，missing也是現(xiàn)在分詞作主語補(bǔ)足語。

1 woke up with a start:...
with a start,由于受到驚動(dòng)，驚醒了。冒號(hào)后面是一個(gè)解釋性的分句，是對(duì)start所作的具體說明。
2 recognize as,認(rèn)出是。
3 Whatever are you doing up here?你究竟在這上面干什么。
whatever 用于疑問句中，用以加強(qiáng) what 的語氣，作“究竟什么”解，口語中很常用。
4 You certainly did give me a surprise!你確實(shí)使我感到意外!
在英語中助動(dòng)詞 do 可以用來表示強(qiáng)調(diào)。此時(shí)助動(dòng)詞do放在謂語動(dòng)詞之前。
5 Thirteen is not as good as one,but it is better than nothing.
敲 13下雖然不如敲 1下好，但總比1下不敲強(qiáng)多了。

2 for the simple reason that…這里 that引導(dǎo)的從句是 the reason的同位語。

such位于句首，起強(qiáng)調(diào)作用，后面要用倒裝語序， that引導(dǎo)的是 such的同位語從句。
4 as it did in the case of Alfred Bloggs who… worked as a dustman for the Ellesmere Corporation. 正如給埃爾斯米爾公司當(dāng)清潔工的艾爾弗雷德·布洛格斯的情況所造成的怪現(xiàn)象那樣。 as it did中的 it是指上一句中that 從句所指的情況，而 did是替代give rise to curious situations。
